4th largest consumer spending event of the year //

Mother’s Day occurs annually on the second Sunday of May and falls on May 12th in 2024. It began being celebrated in the United States in the early 20th century at the initiative of Anna Jarvis who held a memorial for her mother and then campaigned to make it a recognized holiday. Mother’s Day celebrates the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mother’s on society.

Consumer Insights

Mother’s Day comes in at #4 on the National Retail Foundation’s (NRF’s) list of top consumer spending events. The National Retail Federation (NRF) partners with Prosper Insights & Analytics to survey consumers annually about their Mother’s Day purchase plans. The data below is from their 2023 survey. They had not yet published 2024 survey results at the time of our April briefing.

While greeting cards and flowers remain steadfast as the most popular gifts, jewelry, special outings, and electronics are where the bulk of the spend will be. For the first time in four years shopping in department stores is tied with online shopping which surged during the pandemic related shut downs.

Timing

Starting in mid April, interest in Mother’s Day gifts tends to grow and typically peaks the day before. (based on 2023 data)
