9th largest consumer spending event of the year //

Halloween brings out the kid in all of us with an opportunity to disguise ourselves in costumes and indulge in sweet treats. Each year manufacturers, retailers, and consumers find bigger and better ways to get in the spirit of things. Halloween is Tuesday, October 31, 2023.

Consumer Insights

The National Retail Foundation (NRF) lists Halloween as #9 on their list of top consumer spending events. Here’s what they learned about consumer buying plans in their 2023 survey.

According to the NRF, in 2023 Halloween spending is expected to reach a record $12.2 billion. The leading sources of inspiration for these purchases continues to be online searches (37%), within a retail store or costume shop (28%), and friends and family (20%).

Timing

The NRF’s survey tells us that roughly 45% of consumers celebrating Halloween plan to begin shopping for it before October. In historical Google Trends data from 2022 we see that once we pass September 1st online demand for Halloween costumes steadily grows until it drastically spikes the day before the holiday.
