Recently I was wishing I knew more about what my father had done at his job. He worked at Univac and it’s iterations the entire time I was growing up.

And then, while visiting my mother, I saw his business card staring at me from her bedside table.

Univac is credited with making the first commercially produced digital computer in 1951. These giant computers used thousands of vacuum tubes for computation and were designed to outperform and thus replace the punched-card accounting machines of the day.

I think he would be over the moon to know that his daughter has designed a strategic omnichannel marketing planning calendar that outperforms and thus replaces fly-by-night disconnected accounting spreadsheet operations. And that his grandson, Shane Mechelke leads the build of it.

I’m taking the arrival of this little piece of paper as a sure sign that he is.
