6th largest consumer spending event of the year //
Easter arrives on April 17th in 2022. It is observed with religious services commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and celebrated widely with egg decorating, Easter baskets, bunnies, egg hunts, and family gatherings. It is a moveable feast that falls in either March or April based on a lunisolar calendar.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) surveys consumers annually about their Easter purchase plans.
After most Easter plans were affected by the pandemic, consumers were enthusiastic to celebrate Easter 2021 with purchasing plans rising. Almost half of adults planned to visit family in person as we saw people getting vaccinated. As we transition into 2022 we have high hopes of more in-person holiday celebrations.
As the pandemic became a reality and shut downs swept the nation, consumers looked online for their needs. Google trends shows us that in the third week of March searches for Easter candy began ramping up, with spikes the week before and day of, as consumers made plans to ensure they would get what they needed in time to maintain their Easter traditions.
In 2020 retailers responded to their employees and communities needs. From the NRF, “Stores like Trader Joe’s, Lowe’s, Sprouts Farmers Markets and BJ’s Wholesale Club are closing their doors on Easter Sunday to give essential employees a break and time at home to celebrate with their families. Some small businesses are stepping up to give communities a hand in planning socially distant egg hunts, and offering contact-less order pickups and fun ideas for DIY decor and stay-at-home celebrations.”
