Easter arrives on March 31st in 2024. It is observed with religious services commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and celebrated widely with egg decorating, Easter baskets, bunnies, egg hunts, and family gatherings. It is a moveable feast that falls in either March or April based on a lunisolar calendar.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) surveys consumers annually about their Easter purchase plans. These results are from 2023. They had not yet published the results from their 2024 survey at the time of our February briefing.
Candy and food top the list with 90 and 89% of consumers planning purchases in these categories. 65% plan to purchase gifts as well. Of note roughly half will be spending on new Easter outfits.
Historical Google trends data shows us that in the first week of April 2023 searches for Easter candy began ramping up, with spikes the week before and day of (April 9th in 2023), as consumers made plans to ensure they would get what they needed in time to maintain their Easter traditions.
