4th largest consumer spending event of the year //

Mother’s Day occurs annually on the second Sunday of May and falls on May 14th in 2023. It began being celebrated in the United States in the early 20th century at the initiative of Anna Jarvis who held a memorial for her mother and then campaigned to make it a recognized holiday. Mother’s Day celebrates the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mother’s on society.

Consumer Insights

Mother’s Day comes in at #4 on the National Retail Foundation’s (NRF’s) list of top consumer spending events. The National Retail Federation (NRF) partners with Prosper Insights & Analytics to survey consumers annually about their Mother’s Day purchase plans. The data below is from their 2022 survey.

The top categories of planned spending in 2022:

1. Greeting Card   2. Flowers   3. Special Outing  4.  Gift Cards  5. Clothing / Accessories   6. Jewelry   7. Personal Services  8.  Housewares / Gardening  9.  Other 10. Books / CDs   11. Electronics

While overall  planned spending is expected to continue its incline, many consumers are not in a position to splurge due to financial hardships, as a result of the pandemic, and so look for creative ways to show mom they care.
